We Spray for Spotted Lanternfly
The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive insect that had not been seen in the United States prior to 2014, when it was found in Central Pennsylvania. If this species becomes established it could be a formidable threat to industry and the economy - of special concern for the fruit orchard, grape product, and logging industries. Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said the invasive insect "threatens to destroy $18 billion worth of agricultural commodities here like apples, grapes and hardwoods, inflicting a devastating impact on the livelihoods of our producers and businesses."
Identifying the Spotted Lanternfly
Adults are spotted, brownish-grey about 1" to 1¼" long. Although they have two pairs of wings, they jump/hop more than fly. When they hop or take flight you may see their bright orange-red and white under-wings. There are no look-alike insects in the eastern U.S., so once you see those underwings, you know what you are looking at.
The small egg masses of 30-50 and 1"-2" round may be found in Fall located on solid objects like tree trunks, rocks, and picnic table. They are shiny at first, but soon dry and look like dabs of pale grey mud.
In the spring, those eggs hatch into tiny, 1/8"-inch, black and white, non-flying feeding-machines called nymphs. As the spring progresses, the nymphs pass through four stages, or “instars,” getting a bit larger each time. The first three instars are black with white spots, the fourth instar stage is orange with black and white spots about ½"-long.
In early summer the first adults begin to appear, and the cycle begins again.
